The Restoring Fisheries for Sustainable Livelihoods in Lake Malawi program, or REFRESH, is conserving the freshwater biodiversity of Lake Malawi by restoring natural fisheries productivity in lakeshore districts throughout Malawi. Mzuzu Dairy's initiative under this project is called "Integrating Cassava and Dairy Value Chains". We intend to work with local fishing communities to encourage the production of dairy and animal feed through the cultivation of cassava. We will also advise them on starting their own dairy production and buy back whatever dairy they are able to produce. This will allow local farmers to diversify their sources of income while easing the burden on local fish populations.
